Fly fishing has long been a male-dominated sport, and for many women, learning the craft can feel intimidating, especially when trying to pick it up alongside partners or significant others. Too often, those well-meaning fishing partners expect us to figure things out as they do, sometimes resorting to stepping in and taking over rather than patiently guiding us through the process. That’s where our Women’s Only Fly Fishing Lessons come in. In 2024, we set out to create a different kind of learning experience, one where women could feel completely comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and developing their skills at their own pace. We wanted to build a space where failure wasn’t frustrating but instead an opportunity to grow. And that’s exactly what we did. A Learning Experience Designed for Women As the lead guide, I had the privilege of working with an incredible group of women throughout the season. Holly Jones joined in to lend her expertise, and we kicked off the year with our talented photographer, Ross Downard, capturing the essence of these empowering days on the water. His images tell the story better than words ever could: women stepping into their waders for the first time, concentrating on the perfect cast, celebrating their first catches, and simply enjoying the serenity of being on the water. Unlike traditional lessons that might focus on “just doing it,” we break everything down into digestible steps, ensuring that each angler understands not just how but why we do things a certain way. From casting to knot tying to reading the water, we take a hands-on approach—meaning we guide you through every step without taking over. This method helps build real confidence and ensures that when the lesson is over, you’re not just repeating motions—you truly understand what you’re doing. A Day in the Life of a Women’s Fly Fishing Lesson Each session begins at the Fishwest shop, where we start with an overview of gear, basic techniques, and the fundamentals of fly fishing. This is also where participants receive their gift bags—packed with essentials to set them up for success. After gearing up, we head out to the lake—most often Smith & Morehouse—where the real learning begins. With patience, guidance, and plenty of encouragement, we spend the day honing skills, practicing casts, and, of course, catching fish! A delicious lunch and refreshing drinks keep everyone fueled, and by the time we wrap up around 4 PM, our anglers leave not only with newfound skills but with a deeper appreciation for the sport and the community they’ve become a part of. What’s Ahead for 2025 We are thrilled to be offering these lessons again in 2025, and instead of having dates specifically picked out, we want to allow you guys to tell us when you want to take the class. The cost remains $325 per person, which includes all gear for the day, instruction, lunch, drinks, and, of course, an unforgettable experience.
