Fishwest Monthly Staff Picks – Layering Right for Winter (Men’s Edition)

Welcome to the latest installment Fishwest Gear Guide! The goal of this guide is to provide you, the angler, with the recommendations and professional insight from the Fishwest staff in order to make your fishing adventures a success. Each month, we will be exploring different fisheries, species, the tackle and other gear we think you would need in order to find success on the water.

As we continue where we left off now with the Men’s picks for the remainder of what winter we have left, we jump right into our favorite pieces and head for the river. Hope to see you out on the water regardless of the forecast as we’ve been spotting sporadic but much anticipated Buffalo Midges and BWO’s and eager fish up.

Depending on your warmth-o-meter you’ll find us in most, if not all of these tried and true options. No matter the snowy destination and how much anticipated trudging through that white stuff there is something on this list for you. Note: We stay away from cotton and use moisture wicking materials.

We opted for the Lightweight Core Top here for the layers we’ll wear in addition – this is an great foundation layer with anti-odor & moisture wicking fabrics. Not a fan of polyester? Check out the Ultra-Wool Core Top – we might button up with a Big Sky Shirt.

We’ll zip into the Midweight Core Top or another great option would be the Rivershed Quarter Zip keeping mobility to allow maximum comfort while fishing or at the oars, it is a great casual piece for post fishing beverages.

As tested by our Shop Manager & Travel Coordinator in search of anadromous beauties in pristine BC rivers and by our Shop’s Assistant Manager & E-Commerce Lead in his home town back in Maryland, the Simms West Fork Jacket variations of PrimaLoft & Cross Core Technology for maximum thermal insulation comes recommended as a must have for those cold days you want to maximize warmth. For your all in one jacket go you need to check out the Bulkley Jacket.

There is no shortage of bottom layer options, these Core Bottoms are offered in 2 versions Lightweight and a Midweight – Simms has also introduced their new Challenger Sweatpant.

We’ll wear the moisture wicking merino wool the Merino Midweight OTC Sock if you’re looking for a thicker version or to double up, check out the Merino Thermal OTC Sock.

A wader is only as good as its zipper and with the extended YKK waterproof zipper the G4Z Wader stands out to be our favorite durable and convenient wader. The compression-molded stockingfeet are a nice touch too.

G4 Pro Wading Boot in the Vibram – we pair these with the G4 Pro HardBite Star Cleats.

Stay safe and warm out there! As always, if you have any questions swing on by or give us a call at the shop Monday through Saturday 9AM – 5PM MST at 435-783-679. Until next time, Cheers!
