Fly Fishing 101 is a beginner-friendly program that was designed by Orvis, one of the leading names in fly fishing. The program is designed to teach new anglers the basics of fly fishing, including casting techniques, knot tying, fly selection, and much more. Fishwest has been offering the Orvis 101 program for 6 years, and it has become a hit within the fly fishing community.

Why take the Fly Fishing 101 class?

There are many benefits to taking this class. First, the class provides a solid foundation of knowledge for new anglers, helping them to get started in the sport with confidence. The class is also a great way to meet other anglers who are just getting started, building a sense of community around the sport.

Another benefit of the class is that it is taught by experienced instructors who have a wealth of knowledge to share. Our instructors at Fishwest Fly Shop are knowledgeable and passionate about fly fishing, and they bring that enthusiasm to the space.

Meet our Instructors

JC Weeks – I grew up in the shadow of some of the most heralded ski slopes in the western United States. Instead of skiing or snowboarding, I took up fly fishing at a young age. Through high school & my early college years I was fortunate enough to represent my country playing Sled Hockey. I started at Fishwest as a member of the web team and now I oversee and manage almost every aspect of the Fishwest e-commerce platform. I also act as the main point of contact for all of the Fishwest hosted travel trips.

Brooke Bailey – Born and raised in Salt Lake City, the mountains of Utah have always been my playground. I go camping as often as I can and never miss an opportunity to adventure with the pup and enjoy life to the fullest. Having now joined the Fishwest Team, I’ve realized my life had been missing a career centered around my truest passions: adventure, fly fishing, and educating others on those very things!

What can you expect from the Orvis Fly Fishing 101 class at Fishwest?

In this class, we will cover all the basics of fly fishing, from equipment to technique. Whether you’re a beginner or have some experience, this class will provide valuable information to help you become a more skilled angler.

Let’s start with the equipment. To fly fish, you will need a fly rod, a fly reel, a fly line, and some flies. Orvis offers a wide range of equipment for beginners, and our experienced staff will be happy to assist you in selecting the gear that’s right for you.

Once you have your equipment, it’s time to learn how to cast. Casting is the most important skill in fly fishing, and it can take some practice to master. Our instructors will provide step-by-step instruction to help you develop a smooth, efficient casting stroke.

Once you have mastered the basic casting techniques, it’s time to learn about different types of flies and how to match them to the fish you’re targeting. Our instructors will teach you about the different types of flies, when and where to use them, and how to tie them.

Another important aspect of fly fishing is understanding the behavior of the fish you’re targeting. Our instructors will teach you about the different species of fish, their feeding habits, and how to locate them in the water.

Finally, we will cover basic techniques for playing and landing fish. This is the fun part! Once you’ve hooked a fish, you’ll need to know how to play it properly to avoid breaking the line or losing the fish.
