Bonefish! Fishwest is hosting a trip to the Andros South Lodge to hopefully become close friends with plenty of bonefish! With that in mind here is a step by step fly tying tutorial on the “Spawning Gotcha”

First lay down a base layer of thread, then attach some medium bead chain eyes to your hook using figure 8 wraps about a beads length away from the eye of the hook.

Fly tying

Tie in some pearl diamond braid at the curve of the hook. Leave a tag end that extends about a bead length beyond the hook. This is to give a little flash to the spawn sack.

Fly tying

Cut a small section of orange marabou away from the marabou stem. Tie it in with the butt section towards the rear of the fly. The marabou should barely extend past the flash. Trim away the excess marabou.

Fly tying

Tightly wrap the diamond braid forward and wrap it between the eyes using a few figure-8 wraps. At this point I like doing a quick whip finish to keep things tight and clean.

Fly tying

Invert the hook and tie in a clump of tan craft fur on an angle. The craft fur should meet the hook point and the total length should extend a little beyond the marabou. A quick whip finish or two and congratulations are in order… you’ve finished tying your Spawning Gotcha!
