Product Review: Fishpond Westwater Lumbar Pack

When I’m shopping for the right fishing pack, three key points come to mind as far as my priorities are concerned.

First, efficiency. I want a pack that gives me options. When I fish, I bring along gadgets and ample product in an effort to ensure I’m always prepared. That said, I want a pack with options: accessible pockets (enough to separate snacks from other fishing items), external places to loop or carry tools, and adjustable straps that fit well on my small frame. Also, having a pack that is waterproof is a must. I carry my phone and camera with me at all times, and knowing that they are safe inside a well-protected pack removes the worry and risk of potential damage.

Second, comfort. I want a pack that is large enough to hold everything I need, but not bulky to the point of being uncomfortable. There’s nothing more inconvenient than having a pack that gets in the way or alters your casting. Comfort and accessibility are key.

Third, affordability. The cost of fly packs can vary a lot. However, as in all things, you get what you pay for.

After doing my research and comparing the variety of packs available at Fishwest, I decided on the Fishpond Westwater Lumbar pack. There are so many things I love about this pack. Its size is perfect—not too big, not too small. I am able to pack all of my gear and snacks for a long day on the water. If you’re hiking into a location, there is a place to thread your rod tube on the bottom. It has multiple areas on the outside of the pack to hang tools. It’s waterproof, which, as I mentioned, is very important. The adjustable waist strap and removable neck strap fit well and are pleasantly comfortable.

Aside from being waterproof, my favorite feature has to be the net pouch. I haven’t ever owned a pack that has a spot to hold my Rising Brookie net. Needless to say, I love the convenience of having a place to tuck it away, and it’s easily accessible when needed.

It’s nearly impossible to find anything that I dislike about the Fishpond Westwater Lumbar pack. The only thing that comes to mind is the stiffness of the zippers. Because the pack is waterproof, the zippers are a bit tough to open and close—a small price to pay for having the security of knowing everything inside the pack is dry and safe.

Fishwest has a great selection of packs to choose from, both online as well as on hand at the shop. The staff knows the products well, and are able to fit you with the pack you need. I highly recommend the Fishpond Westwater Lumbar pack.
