Sage Maverick Rod Review

Fly fishing is as much about the adventure as it is about the tools you bring along. Whether you’re chasing tailing reds in the flats or battling golden dorado in remote waters, the Sage Maverick is a versatile rod that delivers power, precision, and performance across environments.

Designed for Versatility

Built with saltwater environments in mind, the Maverick’s fast action excels in generating high line speeds to combat wind and deliver accurate casts. However, its adaptability makes it equally impressive in freshwater scenarios. With the right line pairing, it’s a rod that transitions seamlessly between different species and fishing styles.

Insights from the Fishwest Team

We asked our team to share their experiences with the Sage Maverick, and here’s what they had to say:

JC Weeks:

“My time with the Sage Maverick has been a good one. I have been fortunate enough to fish this series of rods all over the place during my travels with our hosted trips. From roosterfish and dorado in Baja to bonefish, permit, and baby tarpon on the flats of Andros, one thing is for sure: the Sage Maverick will hold up to the test of the toughest saltwater fishing conditions.

I would consider this rod a great mix of both power and feel. It has the power of a modern fast-action rod, coupled with a little bit more flex and feel than some others in its class. This makes it a great choice for a wide variety of casting styles. The faster action of this rod also means that it maintains accuracy at a variety of distances.

Whether you’re looking for your first saltwater rod or an extremely capable backup, save yourself the hassle—and a little bit of money—and check out the Sage Maverick. You won’t be disappointed.”

Ben Bowen:

“When going after stripers off the Rhode Island and Massachusetts coastline, I feel it is important to have a faster action rod that can punch through the wind. You also want to have a rod in hand that has a strong butt section that can pull up 40 feet of line to make that quick shot for that cruising bruiser that got your attention. The Maverick checks these boxes.

It also has what seems to be a very light swing weight, possibly lighter than the R8 Salt, which costs significantly more money. I use the 10 WT while fishing for larger stripers matched with a Lamson Centerfire 10 reel and a Rio Outbound Short also in a 10WF.

This rod has plenty of backbone to make that bomber blind cast in hopes of getting lucky and is still able to make the clean shorter casts when sight fishing the sandbar flats and estuary waters. This rod absolutely fits my casting style, and I have confidence in it for any saltwater destination trip. I’ve used it in Christmas Island fishing for larger triggerfish as well as smaller GT. I also own the Maverick in a 12 WT for larger tarpon and GT.”

Brooke Bailey:

“I will say it took a lot for me to finally accept that the Scott Meridian was gone and I needed to find another rod to fill its spot. I wanted something that didn’t break the bank and still performed. This rod is it. Since bringing it into “the family” it’s gone on several destination trips with me. Louisiana, Iceland, Honduras, Bahamas, Argentina and soon back to Bolivia.

I love this rod because it has the backbone to pick up the line you have out and cast, with precision, to the target and put the fight in on the really big ones. I have paired mine with the Scientific Anglers Grand Slam, Scientific Anglers Red Fish, Rio Flats Pro, and most recently the Scientific Anglers Jungle Titan Taper while in Argentina. The rod held up to true to weight lines and thoroughly impressed me with the overweighted Jungle Titan. A versatile rod and cost effective rod that I suggest anyone have in the arsenal of rods.”

Power and Performance

The Maverick’s backbone provides the confidence to battle hard-fighting fish while maintaining sensitivity and control. From targeting golden dorado with an intermediate tip fly line to blind casting for stripers, it balances power and finesse.

Freshwater vs. Saltwater Setups

While the Maverick shines in saltwater, its versatility makes it a solid choice for freshwater anglers. With line weights ranging from 6 to 12, the rod accommodates everything from bass and pike to permit and tarpon.

Conclusion

The Sage Maverick is a standout rod for anglers who need performance and adaptability in one package. Its ability to handle diverse conditions with power and precision makes it a reliable companion, whether you’re chasing trophy fish in saltwater or exploring your local rivers.

With insights from our team and real-world testing, we confidently recommend the Sage Maverick for anglers looking for their next adventure.
