How-To

When the Gates Open: Your Uinta Prep Guide

The gates open, the snow fades, and the trailheads start calling. Early season in the Uintas is one of the most special times to be on the water—less pressure, hungry fish, and cold, clean streams. Here’s what to pack, what to expect, and how to make the most of those first few trips up Mirror Lake Highway.

1. Know Before You Go

  • Check forest service gate status (link)

  • Be prepared for snow patches and variable trail conditions

  • Carry a paper map—cell service is limited

2. Flies That Work Right Now

  • Uinta Staples: Elk Hair Caddis, Hare’s Ear, Rainbow Warrior

  • Early Season Streamers: Sculpzillas and Mini Dungeons

  • Don’t forget terrestrials—especially ants on warmer days

3. Pack Smart

  • Layers, always

  • Bear spray (for peace of mind)

  • Lightweight net, floatant, and a backup spool

4. Ethics in Early Season

  • Watch for spawning activity in creeks

  • Stick to durable trails and gravel bars

  • Pack out every scrap, even if it’s not yours

The Uintas don’t give up fish easily—but they reward those who go prepared. Swing by the shop for fly suggestions based on elevation and runoff levels, or follow us on Instagram for weekly trail and water reports. We’ve got your backcountry covered.
